Podcast? What is that? Anybody with an ipod should know what a podcast is, but for those who don't i'll explain it. According to wikipedia a podcast is:
Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their files; a podcast however is distinguished by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading RSS or Atom feeds.

Derived from ipod and brodcasting, hence the word podcast, simply put a podcast is simply like a radio program that is available for download via the web. Starting soon GrownFolk Entertainment will bring you a podcast every week. In the podcast we will update you on Grownfolk affairs, but we will also be doing interviews, and playing our music, as well as music from other artist. Most of the podcasts will be hosted by yours truly, Shirl Dee capital, but as always my man Al Pete will be in the house as well. Please tune in and check back to check out the podcast.

New thought....

Wouldn't it be good if you could come to a spot...lets say a restaurant or a lounge...grab a drink....chill out...and polly with people who do what you do and are in the same spot that you are? Just think about it....a cool ass place to network with folks and make contacts without all the bullshit that goes along with going to *fill in the blank* club on this night or *fill in the blank* club on that night? *Jerry Seinfeld's voice* Not that there is anything wrong with that. I think that there are some people in Duval that are creating an atmosphere that mirrors what i'm talking about, but GrownFolk Entertainment has a plan as well....Politic Ditto.

What up though!?!

Well...no one ever accused me of being the most sane person ever, so I will continue blogging to myself. Hopefully someone will check this out and be curious enough to want to know what is this grownfolk entertainment that I continue to speak of.

Well on a personal note the semester is about over. For those of you who checked out earlier blogs (which I know most of ya'll didn't) you know i'm in a phd program. Well don't let no one tell you wrong, this shit is hard. This is why I haven't been on the scene too much lately and I haven't really done anything new. Well I got a little bit of a break, but not too much of a break, to try to do somethings, so check me out if you get a chance.

Right now, as i'm supposed to be doing a paper for a class I'm blogging and listening to exhibit a on my ipod. Remember that? Well technical difficulties have prevented us from bringing that to ya'll, but we gonna revamp some things and make it fresh for ya'll. That's the plan.

I'm back on the scene....i'm ovaltine hot! What it do good folks? This is S.D. Cap coming back at you. Man its been a minute since i've been on the blog. I've been busy, but i'm back now with a few insightful words as always.

So what's in your rotation or on your ipod? Right now i'm rocking the Library of a Legend, Soulful Genuis Jay Dee edition. For those of you aren't familiar with the library of a legend series, these are compilations of songs from legendary hip hop artist. Of course these aren't mainstream cd's you can pick up in your stores, but if you plug away on the net in the right circle you'll find someone who has a disc or two and you can start collecting them that way. If you're lucky you'll find someone who has all of them and you can hook it up that way. Anyway Jay-Z has a collection of 10 disc. Nas has a collection of about 6 disc. And Jay Dee...God rest his soul, is now included in the collection. He has about 12 disc of songs that he produced, either on his own, with the ummah, or songs that he rocked over with his former group Slum Village. So that's the main thing that i'm rocking right now. I've only been able to hunt down about 6 of the disc out of the collection. That's about 100 plus songs right now. So what you rockin' to?

Let me change tunes real quick. I want to take a moment to commemorate the life and times of Jay Dee aka Jay Dilla. For those of ya'll who don't know who Jay Dee was, he was a great producer who worked with the likes of Tribe called quest, common, busta rhymes, and erykah badu. He was also at one time a member of Slum Village. He passed away this week and I just want to pay my respects. Go out and grab some of his music and keep his legacy alive ya'll!

What's the deal my brothas and my sistas...

I just thought i'd check in, even though I maybe talking to myself. Anyway I was bumpin' some good good and I thought i'd let you all know what i'm listening to right. So what's in the changer magazine.

1. Lil Wayne--The Carter II. He came back around! I'm loving this joint right now. Wayne has stepped up lyrically and the production, minus manny fresh, is fresh (pardon the pun). If you're looking for that same old hot boy spittin' from Wayne them go pop in 400 degreez or the block is hot. If you want to hear a m.c. who has progressed lyrically, then pick up this album.

2. Killer Mike's mixtape--Killa Kill from the ville. This is not Monsta. Killer Mike is back like cooked cracked. Rhymes are solid, and he's totally in his element with this one. Can't wait until the lp drops.

3. Babyface--Grown and Sexy. This has been in my rotation for like 3 months. Good solid r&b joint. Babyface has always dropped good cd's and this is no exception. thumbsup baby!

4. Exhibit A--GrownFolk Ent mixtape. Its biased to comment on this so I won't.

5. Talib Kweli--Right about now mixtape. I'm glad Kweli came back with something fresh. I liked the beautiful struggle and all, it was a good effort. I wasn't in love with it like I was with quality so I was glad for something else from Talib to whet the appetite so to speak. Worth copping.

6. Floetry--Flo'ology. This is a great cd too. I'm still trying to decide how it compares to the first one, but on its own it bangs. It has its smooth joints and also those nice uptempo joint like the single they have out now.

7. Little Brother--The Minstrel Show. Yep...still playing this. I have my joints on here that I have to hear all the time. Beautiful morning was my wake up anthem (lil wayne's "fireman" is the anthem now). But again, I highly recommend this. A good HIP HOP album. and I meant to capitalize that.

8. Black Rob--The Rob report. Honestly I haven't given this cd a lot of spins which is why I threw it in the rotation. I'll get back to you on how this plays out.

9. Kayne West--Late Registration. WAKE UP MR. WEST!!! Still has a lot of reply value just like the first cd did. This did to me isn't great, but it has a lot of good tracks, which makes it solid to me.

10. Big Boi present....Purple Ribbon All Stars--Got Purp Vol. 1. Like the floetry joint i'm still trying to compare this one to their first effort, the purple ribbon mixtape. Its good though and I like it alot. Good to hear the Mo.B (goodie mob) back at it. Clermont lounge is that joint though!

This is what's in the rotation for now. I got some new music that I've got to listen to so look out for that. Next week I should have some reviews on the new Mary J. cd., DTP, youngbloodz, anthony hamilton, and t.i. and the psc's joint so look out.

What it is people! Damn...it feel good being black don't it? I haven't had the chance to really speak to ya'll but i'm here now. lets make up for lost time. I thought my cohort, Pete, would have swung through, but he is busy too. But yes...lets make a manifesto. For folks who are lost on what that actually means, it means lets make a proclamation. Its the "Get Grown" movement. You got milk, you know all the other slogans. Here is one you need to mark down. Yes ya'll it is the time to Get Grown. That means you support us. Can you say hectic????

What it is??? What it look like??? I'm hitting you up from the lovely state of Wisconsin. Yep...you read right...Wisconsin. Its been a hectic few weeks for me but i'm maintaining. About 2 weeks ago I was still a Florida resident, now I am residing in Memphis, TN. Why am I in Memph Ten you ask? Well it all started with a dollar and a dream....just kidding. I am pursuing the final and most rigorious stage in my educational process. Doctoral studies. That's right ladies and gents I am aiming to become Dr. Shirl DEE...well not quite, but you get the picture. So for the next few years this branch of GrownFolk Ent will be in Memphis. But please don't think that i'm going to be out of the picture. I will still be around, not as much, not as heavy, but I still have this goal in my heart too. Pray me, pray for Al Pete, and pray for everyone involved with GrownFolk Ent. As Goodie Mob put it so eloquently (can't you tell i'm being funny???) "One monkey don't stop no show". And while i'm not quite a monkey...i'm not stopping the show. The show will go on and will thrive no matter. Just continue to be on the look out for Exhibit A and all other GrownFolk ventures. Pete and I were at a function with some friends. We were laughing it up as usual, crackin' jokes, and enjoying ourselves to the fullest. Someone observing us commented, "ya'll got ya'll own language don't you?" I never really thought about it like that, but we do. We both can say little phrases that only we know what we're talking about. Well world...i'm about to let you in on the secret. Here are a few GrownFolk phrases that you can incorporate into your vocab if you feel so obliged or you can just use this as a way to understand what the hell we're talking about.

Gawn v. tr: english word....gone: To leave in a manner quicker than usual. Sentence: "When ol' boy saw me he was gawn...he ain't want none". Also refers to something being worn down or used up until it loses all its effectivness. Sentence: "You could hear that nigga car all the way down the block. Brakes squeakin'....them pads is gawn".

Levous n. tr: (pronounced La-vos). Derived from the name of a Jacksonville R&B group. At a show the m.c. was introducing them to the stage and could not pronounce their name correctly. Grownfolk translation: to attract one's attention. Usually used when the person can not be heard on the other end of the phone, is not listening, or is on the other side of the room. Sentence: *Cell phone static* Pete: "Levous...Levous" Shirl: "Here I go...I couldn't hear you"

Milton Bradley n. tr: Derived from the maker of the popular series of board games. The act of playing with somone's emotions, time, or money. Sentence: "His ol' girl is with that Milton Bradley...she know she wanna hook up tonight"

Skust n. tr: (pronounced S-cus-t). Derived from the word Disgusting. To feel turned off, upset or appalled by an action or event. Sentence: You know homie called and tried to borrow some money. Can you believe that? Skust.

904 n. tr: Refers to the time when the cellular minutes are free. Term is taken from the area code of Jacksonville, Florida, hometown of GrownFolk Entertainment. Sentence: "Pete I need to holla at you about some things. I'ma hit you up at the 9:04"

We have alot of little phrases, sounds, and words that we use but here are a few that we use more frequently. Use 'em at your own risk!!

I shouldn't left you...without a hot blog to step to! What it is? What it look like? I'm back on the scene. Its been a second since we've had the opportunity to jump on the web and drop some thoughts. In a word, its been hectic. We've got some things in the works and soon very soon things will be coming to light.

Right now we're in the process of doing the final mix on the GrownFolk Entertainment mixtape. For the record its titled: GrownFolk Entertainment Presents...Exhibit A the mixtape. We're bringing 10 tracks (1 bonus) of heat to the masses. Stay tuned...in a couple of weeks we'll have it mixed and hopefully ready to hit the streets. Good people?! This is the general speakin' on this delayed blog (boo!). Just wanna plug in some info.

First of all...our first event, Danielle's Graduation cookout, was a success! I'm still tired...smile!! The next events will be Mrs. Karen Gant's 50th Birthday Bash on Friday, June 17th, 2005. Location will be posted at a later date. Also, me...Mr. Al Pete's birthday is near and I'm sure they'll be events for that so be on the lookout. July 16th, 2005, I will be performing for the Glamour Girls of University of North Florida. It's a charity entitled "Classy and Sassy". More info later.

Let me blow, my lovin' son DeJuan Alexander is buggin' me 'bout bein' hungry and I have to get ready for some conference calls. I promise I'll have all the info for ya soon. Be eay and I'll catch yall on the next blooooggggg!!

What it is good peoples? I'm back again. Where have I been? Well...since you asked, i'll update you. Its been a busy couple of days. I'm proud to say that my little sister (can I call an 18 year old that) just graduated from high school. So I had to do the family thing for a couple of days. In the midst of that though Grownfolk Entertainment actually hosted our first event as GrownFolk Ent. (1st official event that is). Mr Al and I threw a graduation barbeque for the youngin's in honor of my sister. We had a ball, although it was hard work to organize it, cook the food, and provide the entertainment. But thats what we do right? So be on the look out for more GrownFolk Ent. sponsored events.

I wanna end this by just sharing a few thoughts on my sister and what it meant to me to see her reach this milestone. Time flies by so fast that if you don't stop for a hot minute to breathe...it'll pass you by. It was like yesterday I was changing her diaper and now she's a graduate about to embark on the next part of her life. I just want to wish her well and let her know how proud of her I am. Shout out to you Dani!!!

Happy Mother's Day!!! Although i'm probably 100% + 10 that my Mother won't see this particular salute, I wanted to say it all the same. I feel bad, I didn't even get a card out to her. *hangs head in shame* No excuses for it, so I won't make any. But Momma...I wanted to say....I love you very much and appreciate you. So to all ya'll out there, appreciate the woman who gave you life. And if either don't know the woman who gave you life, or the woman who gave you life isn't all that she should be (appreciate her anyway, but...), then whoever it is out there to you that is like a mother to you, tell her you love her. That goes for grannies, aunties, godmothers, and the like. Happy Mother's Day!!!

I'm a little disappointed with the music that's been coming out lately. The Game ("The Documentary") to me was lukewarm. He had some heat, no doubt, but they were calling this album a classic. 50 Cent was ehhh. I had a chance to check out the new Memphis Bleek today, ("534"). His best track was Jay-Z's farewell track ("Dear summer"). Isn't that crazy!? Although I will say that this to me is his best effort, but if you happen to be an unbiased music fan and not a Memphis Bleek funboy/or girl then you know that his other efforts have been ehhhhh at best. I also had a chance to bump the Common joint "Be". He says that there are gonna be more tracks on the retail, but its hot as is. No real stand out tracks, but that Electric Circus phase seems to be behind him.

I actually listened to an album by an artist name Big Pooh today. I thought that it'd be trash...the name sucks. It sounds like a one those Dr. Seuss m.c.'s. But he's down with the Justus League camp and Little Brother (9th wonder's crew), and so he had some good production. The lyric content was ok. Nothing to write home about, but it was decent. As I write this now i'm bumpin' DMX "Its Dark and Hell is hot". Yeah, I know that was 1998, but I thought i'd pull it out the archives. I remember that summer well. Onyx, DMX, Def Squad, and that L.L. Cool J diss track to Canibus came out. Anyway I digress...the point of me saying all of this is to just show my passion for the music. My co-general Al Pete says i'm hard on the music. Well got dangit...I gotta be. Someone will be the same way with my joints right? I'm a fan of the music and as I fan I won't settle for mediocrity. Is that a crime? If it is let me know.

Who am I feeling right now? Nas is my favorite m.c. right now, top 5 in my list. And i'm actually really into a guy who I never thought i'd be feeling pass his potential...Lil' Wayne. Don't laugh...really. This guy has stepped up his flow, and although his subject matter is limited to say the least, I always thought he had potential to be better than his click. And he's actually pursuing a college education. He gets a big thumbsup in my book for that because i'm an educated m.c. Who else...Jay of course, although he's retired, Common, Outkast. (a little secret...if you can get your hands on Big Boi's Purple Ribbon mixtape you should). Face...I still bump the fix!! I got more...but i'd be going on and on. I'm going to wrap this up for now, but I was thinking this and wanted to put it down. Aiight?! I'm out!!

Makin' Moves???

Yep...Yep...(remember Teddy Riley use to say that?) i'm back again. Its only been a day, so how can we be makin' moves already? Well we stay makin' moves, that's how! Ok...Ok...sometimes thing do get a little slow, but right now we're trying to keep things flowin'. So what do I have to report today? Nothing major, but we got things in the works. Its an exciting time to be affiliated with GrownFolk Entertainment. I just felt like throwing a teaser out there. We'll keep ya'll posted as more details become available.

This is new for me. A blog??? WTF??? But I thought it'd be cool for you guys to see what I'm thinking; what we're thinking. Oh...who am I? Who are we?? GrownFolk Entertainment is the name, and it is comprised of Shirl and Pete (Co-Founders). Our mission is to make music, get our music heard, and to put out quality to music to the masses. Also we're into the entertainment part of the business too. That includes hosting parties, shows, deejaying, as well as putting out mixtape music.

What makes us different from the millions of people out there trying to do music and make it? I don't know. You'll have to determine that. The music is original, fresh, and innovative. Soon we'll have some music for you guys to check out and listen for yourself.

So...thats all I have to say right now. Come holla at us. We will be having a website up soon. And we got some goodies coming with the music and the shows. Look out!!
